Moscow-Kiev railway – the railway that existed in the USSR in 1936-1959.

Formed in 1936 during the division of the . The lines passed through the territory of Moscow, Kaluga, Bryansk, Smolensk, Kursk, Oryol, Tula, Sumy and . The length of the lines was 3821 km. The railway administration was located in Kaluga.

In the freight turnover of the Moscow-Kiev railway, transit transportation of timber, peat, grain, sugar, beets, and cargo prevailed.

Story

Due to the downsizing of the Western railways in July 1936, the Moscow-Kiev (with the center in Kaluga), Belorusskaya (with the center in Gomel) and the Western railways were .

During the Great Patriotic War, almost all parts of the road were located in the territory temporarily occupied by the enemy, which caused enormous damage to the road. The restoration of the infrastructure was completed only by 1953. New stations were built at the stations Bryansk-Orlovsky, Konotop, Bakhmach-Passenger, Khutor-Mikhailovsky.

In 1953, the Moscow – Aprelevka section was electrified.

In February 1959, the Konotop branch (NOD-5) was separated from the Moscow-Kiev railway and transferred to the disposal of the South-Western Railway.

In July 1959, the management of the Moscow-Kiev railway was liquidated, the Moscow branch of the Moscow-Kiev railway became part of the Moscow-Kursk-Donbass railway, which in August of the same year was renamed Moscow, the rest of the branches became part of the Kalinin railway with the center in Smolensk.
