History of creation
Hugo was inspired by a little girl named Marie-Jeannette from the French village of Colpo, whose story is very similar to that of Efrazi. To describe the living conditions of Cosette, Hugo went to the department of Morbihan.
Character biography
Cosette’s real name is Ephrasi. Cosette was the illegitimate daughter of a commoner Fantine and Felix Tholomyes, a windy man from a wealthy family. To meet the needs of her child, Fantine has to work hard, and for this she has to part with Cosette. She naively leaves Cosette to a couple of innkeepers from the village of Montfermay, named Thenardier. These people turn out to be very cruel. They hate the poor child, using her as a servant and demanding more and more money from Fantine to keep her. Fantine settles in Montreuil-sur-Mer, her hometown, where she works at Jean Valjean’s enterprise until the day she is kicked out of her job after being denounced by one of the envious female workers. Left without a livelihood, Fantine continues to find money, sacrificing herself for the welfare of her daughter, and send it to the Thenardier. Time after time the sums requested by Thenardier have increased, but according to the innkeepers, all the money is spent on the upkeep of Cosette.
When Cosette lived with Thenardier, she loved to look at a beautiful, expensive doll in the window of a toy shop.
One evening, Thenardier’s aunt sent Cosette to fetch water into the woods to the well. There Cosette met Jean Valjean, who, fulfilling his promise to the deceased Fantine, takes the girl away from the Thenardier to take care of her. At the same time, she receives as a gift the very doll that she admired so much. Cosette and Jean Valjean travel to Paris, where they first live in Gorbeau’s shack, and then, pursued by Inspector Javert and the police, end up in a Benedictine Bernardine monastery. In the Convent, Cosette spends the rest of her childhood and receives her primary education.
Later, during daily walks with Jean Valjean in the Luxembourg Gardens, Cosette notices a young student, Marius, and they fall in love. After the collapse of the June Uprising of 1832, Marius alone remains alive thanks to the heroism of Jean Valjean. After recovery, Jean Valjean himself brings to Marius Cosette, he proposes to the girl a marriage proposal. At the end of the book, they get married. Cosette did not know who Jean Valjean really was and what the name of her own mother was until the last pages of the novel.
