Settle is a kind of attractive towns in the Yorkshire Dales that makes you wish to come back repeatedly so we had been very excited recently to launch new fabulous cottages in the space, Dugdales Barn and Stepping Stones Barn. What better reason to arrange another visit to the town?

Here are our high five reasons to visit Settle:

1. The historical town

Settle is a wonderful example of a market town in the Yorkshire Dales. You’ll find quirky impartial shops and cafes along with a bustling market that takes place every Tuesday (the charter for the market dates all of the way back to 1249). Surrounded by stunning Dales’ countryside we think it makes a great base for exploring this fabulous a part of the world.

The town itself is stuffed with historical buildings relationship all the way back to the seventeenth, 18th and nineteenth centuries and many of them are Grade II listed. Buildings to look out for include Settle Victoria Corridor, a Victorian music hall that houses numerous concert events all year long, and The Shambles with its six distinctive arches which is home to a wide range of native shops.

One of many highlights of the 12 months is the Settle Flowerpot Festival which transforms the town into a riot of colour every July and August with quirky characters and pretty flowers. Different events embrace the Settle Folk Gathering in September and the Settle Tales Festival in April.

2. Settle to Carlisle Railway

Settle is the starting point for this world famous railway journey and while you don’t need to travel all 73 miles to Carlisle, we do think it is worth travelling at the least part of this route by train. Initially constructed within the 1870s it is still considered to be a masterpiece of Victorian engineering.

Highlights include the Ribbledale Viaduct, an iconic construction which is four hundred metres in size, 32 metres in height and with a formidable 24 arches situated in Horton-in-Ribblesdale, a popular starting level for the Three Peaks challenge.

3. Gorgeous countryside

One of the big draws of Settle for many visitors is its location proper within the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. It is an ideal base for tackling the three peaks of Penyghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. Different factors of curiosity include Castleberg Crag, a limestone cliff that towers over Settle and Gordale Scar – a huge gorge with two waterfalls which you could climb up and explore.

Stainforth Drive is just north of Settle and is a really pretty waterfall on the River Ribble. Watch closely and you might even spot some salmon jumping by the water on their journey up the river.

Ingleborough Cave is full of historical artefacts that date back millions of years and has been open to the public since 1837. Enter by way of the imposing cave entrance and you’ll see lovely icicle-like rock formations and streams of still water.

4. Consuming and drinking

You’ll be spoilt for choice of places to eat and drink in Settle and some of the in style (and intriguingly named) institutions is Ye Olde Naked Man Café, which was originally built as an inn in 1663 and now serves a number of homemade bread, cakes and meals to their customers. Tales about the name include a legend that a naked man was buried underneath the building and that it was as soon as house to an undertaker.

The Lion pub is housed within another historic building (dating from 1640) and options of the building embody an inglenook fireplace and historical photos of the town. Other pubs include The Royal Oak which has been lately refurbished and The Talbot Arms which has a big beer garden for these sunny summer time days and a wood-burning fire for when it is chillier. All three pubs supply a terrific selection of real ales, residence-cooked meals and many character!
